Volkswagen adds two new GTX models to electric range

The wraps have come off not one but two new GTX models, joining hot versions of the ID.4 and ID.5 already in the market. The ID.3 has long been ripe for a hot hatch 'GTI' version so that comes as no surprise but the German brand has also revealed a dynamic version of the newly launched ID.7 Tourer.

There's clearly demand for these types of electric cars too - as VW has revealed that 20 per cent of orders for the ID.4 and ID.5 across Europe is for a GTX version.

Volkswagen has also confirmed GTX versions of the ID.7 and ID Buzz will also be joining the roster.

When available the GTX will sit at the top of the ID.3 range and comes in a choice of two flavours - the GTX and GTX Performance.

Both versions retain the standard model's rear wheel drive - so no AWD option - but receive notable power output improvements. The GTX comes with 210kW of power while the GTX Performance gets 240kW. The latter being VW's most powerful electric motor to date.

Both benefit from an upgraded battery pack too - a 79 kWh lithium-ion unit - which can accept up to 175 kW of power at an ultra-rapid DC charger. And Volkswagen is also aiming for a WLTP range of 600km - which in our real world estimate will mean a vehicle range of over 300 miles.

Setting the GTX models apart from the rest of the ID.3 range, there are premium sports seats as standard and a smattering of GTX lettering inside the cabin. There's a larger 12.9-inch infotainment central screen to enjoy and they've even moved the driving mode selector to a seperate steering column switch.

Outside, the designers have created a GTX-only front bumper - including new daytime running lights - introduced new 20-inch Skagen GTX wheels, which can be optioned as completely black. Finally all the black exterior components come in a high gloss finish.

Volkswagen ID.7 GTX Tourer

Dubbed as VW's most powerful estate car ever produced, the ID.7 GTX Tourer is following hot on the heels of the release of the standard model which was only revealed a month ago.

Unlike the ID.3 GTX which retains the single motor / rear wheel drive of standard models, the ID.7 GTX Tourer is benefiting from a second electric motor. VW has given its usual AWD badge to it - so 4MOTION is used - and can spit out 250kW of power in total; 210kW on the rear axle and an extra 40kW on the front.

Power comes from a new 86kWh battery pack - up from 77kWh on the standard ID.7 Tourer - and will mean an extra 30 miles or so in real world driving range. There's also been an increase in the amount of DC the battery can accept which is now up to 200kW of power.

For drivers looking at towing capability the inclusion of 4MOTION has meant Volkswagen can upgrade the maximum towing capacity from 1,000kg to 1,400kg.

As with other GTX models, the ID.7 GTX Tourer has been given a selection of sportier, upgraded finishes compared to other models in the range, so that's sportier seats as standard, plenty of GTX lettering to remind you what you're inside, and 20-inch Skagen alloys.

A uniquely designed front bumper helps to distinguish the GTX from other ID.7 Tourers, which incorporates the GTX motif daylight running lights design. A really nice touch is the front of the car has an illuminated VW logo as standard.
