Almost one in five new cars was an electric vehicle in November 2021
It wasn’t that long ago when some people were saying that motorists wouldn’t want to buy electric cars, so those people might be surprised to hear that almost one in five new cars was a battery electric vehicle in November 2021.
Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) represented 18.8% of the new car market in November 2021, according to figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).
This equated to 21,726 units, which was more than double compared with November 2020.
Plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) also grew their share to 9.3%, or 10,796 units. In total, plug-in cars – plug-in hybrids and battery electric vehicles – represented 28.1% of the market in November.
During 2021 so far, 1,538,585 new cars have been registered, of which 17.5% have been BEVs or PHEVs, meaning that over this 11 month period, one in six new cars is capable of being plugged in.
Sales of EVs have been rising steadily over recent months, with no sign that these figures will do anything but continue to increase in the future.
