The Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) is a great technology, however DriveElectric would like to advise our customers that the real-world MPG is unlikely to match the manufacturers’ stated figures. Until September 2018 this was mainly due to the conditions of the NEDC test which generates the figure, whereby a short cycle must be performed on a cold vehicle at 20–30 °C on a flat road, in the absence of wind. Read more about the test conditions here.
This test was replaced by the EU’s Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) on September 1 2018.
We are delighted the NEDC test was replaced, we have been concerned since 2013 about it’s inability to reflect real world driving conditions. The switch from NEDC to WLTP testing was originally scheduled for 2020, though in our opinion it’s not surprising its implementation was moved forward following greater public awareness and concern over air quality and pollution in UK towns and cities.
Customers considering a PHEV should also be aware that real-world CO2 emissions are still likely to be higher than published figures. Our sales team can offer guidance on the likely real-world figures based on our own experience of driving these vehicles.
