Volkswagen ID.4 GTX design & powertrain

The Volkswagen ID.4 GTX retains the 77kWh lithium-ion battery of the longer-range ID.4 models but adds an electric motor on the front axle, giving all-wheel drive.

The front motor delivers an extra 162 Nm of torque, in addition to the existing 310 Nm of torque of the rear motor, power increases from 204 PS to 299 PS, and 0-62mph acceleration improves from 8.5 seconds to 6.2 seconds. The GTX also sits 15mm lower than the standard ID.4.

Externally the ID.4 GTX looks very similar to the ID.4, and the spacious interior of the ID.4 is unchanged, along with the large storage compartment between the two front seats, three wide rear seats, a flat floor, and the large 543-litre boot, which increases to 1,575 litres with the rear seats folded down. There’s also a compartment under the boot floor to store the charging cables.

VW ID.4 GTX on the road

What is the ID.4 GTX like to drive?

The Volkswagen ID.4 lease option is excellent to drive, and the ID.4 GTX adds faster acceleration and more grip. Handling is good and the comfortable ride quality is retained – despite the 2,224 kg kerb weight.

Thanks to the added performance, the ID.4 GTX is more responsive than the ID.4 around town and on country roads, and it’s also extremely impressive as an effortless long distance motorway cruiser.

There are drive modes of Eco, Comfort, Sport, Traction and Individual. The gear selector, which is positioned on the right-hand side of the driver’s instrument display, can be used to select ‘B’, to provide more brake regeneration.

Volkswagen have included an augmented reality head-up display which features, for example, moving arrows to indicate a turn is approaching. And the headlights are excellent, either on dipped or main beam.

There’s ambient interior lighting and you can change the colours between options including red, yellow, blue and green. And there’s a light strip running under the windscreen which lights up in different colours in response to different situations and actions carried out by the driver.

Like most new cars, the majority of functions in the ID.4 are controlled via the central touchscreen, which can mean lots of button-pressing, despite very few conventional buttons on the dashboard.

And, like a Tesla, you don’t need to switch on the ID.4 (although there is a button on the right-hand side of the steering column to do this) – when you get in, the car is already on, and the same applies when you stop the car – no need to switch it off, just get out and lock it.

Volkswagen ID.4 GTX driving range and charging

The Volkswagen ID.4 GTX has a WLTP combined electric driving range of 300 miles, or 291 miles in the case of the GTX Max. Our ‘real world’ range however, puts the range at a more realistic 255 miles.

The ID.4 GTX can rapid charge at up to 125 kW DC, when the charging time is 38 minutes from 0 to 80%.

If you can find an 11 kW AC 3-phase charger (which are more common in Germany, and only typically found at some workplaces in the UK), a charge to 100% would take 7 hours 30 minutes.

A 0-100% charge at a 7.2 kW wall box takes around 12 hours 40 minutes.

The Volkswagen ID.4 GTX offers the same spacious body style as the ID.4 but with the added security of all-wheel drive, and more performance. The rear-wheel-drive ID.4 is excellent to drive, and the ID.4 GTX is even better.

The ID.4 GTX still offers a good driving range of up to 300 miles, and it can use a 125 kW DC rapid charger to provide a 0-80% charge in 38 minutes. The Volkswagen ID.4 GTX is a car that can do pretty much everything.
