£63 million charging boost set to accelerate UK’s electric car future
The UK government has unveiled a new £63 million funding package aimed at expanding the nation’s electric car charging infrastructure, with big benefits for households, businesses, and the NHS.
Announced on 13 July 2025, this investment is part of the government’s broader Plan for Change strategy to lower transport costs, support British industries, and help more drivers make the switch to electric.

What’s in the new £63 million package?
The funding will be split across three main areas:
- £25 million for local authorities to support at-home charging for drivers without driveways, using cross-pavement cable channels to safely connect parked EVs to home electricity. This could save households up to £1,500 a year in fuel costs compared to petrol or diesel.
- £8 million for the NHS to electrify medical fleets across over 200 NHS sites in England. The government says this will not only reduce emissions but save millions in fuel and maintenance, funds that can be redirected to patient care.
- Depot charging grants for businesses, supporting the rollout of charge points at logistics, HGV, and coach depots nationwide, helping the fleet sector prepare for the zero-emissions future.
This is in addition to the £400 million already committed to EV infrastructure and the recent update to the Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) mandate, both designed to strengthen the UK’s leadership in clean transport.

Why does this matter?
Charging access remains one of the biggest barriers to electric car adoption, especially for those without off-street parking. This latest move aims to make charging fairer and more affordable for everyone, whether you live in a flat or drive for a living.
The UK now has over 82,000 public charge points, with one being added every 30 minutes. A further 100,000 are expected as part of ongoing private and public investment, including £6 billion pledged by industry to 2030.
Better signage, more visibility
Also announced: the rollout of new EV road signage across the UK’s major routes, finally making it easier for drivers to find public chargers. Large electric car (and van) charging hubs can now be signposted from A-roads and key locations, a long-awaited change welcomed by the likes of InstaVolt, Osprey, and ChargeUK.
Why it’s good news for leasing
This kind of investment helps improve the day-to-day experience of electric car ownership, which ultimately makes leasing more attractive and accessible. Better access to charging at home, work and on the move can reduce running costs and build driver confidence.
Plus, with over 34 new electric cars priced under £30,000, and 2 in 5 used electric vehicles now selling for under £20,000, the move to electric is becoming more affordable by the day.
Heidi Alexander, Transport Secretary:
"We’re making it easier and cheaper to own an electric vehicle... and we’re building a fairer, cleaner future where every family can benefit from cheaper, greener transport."
Karin Smyth, Health Minister:
“This is a win-win: cheaper travel for the NHS and cleaner air for our communities.”

Chris Gormley, NHS Chief Sustainability Officer:
“This investment will help Trusts cut emissions, reduce costs and reinvest savings into patient care.”
Industry voices:
From EV charging networks to motoring organisations, the response has been overwhelmingly positive, with many praising the move to modernise signage and make off-street charging more accessible.
