BMW confirms new updated iX3 – more range, new design and a smaller footprint

This isn’t just an update of the outgoing iX3, it’s a ground-up rethink. BMW says the new model essentially “skips a generation” by introducing sixth-generation eDrive technology, new battery architecture, and a digital platform that’s set to underpin 40 new BMWs by 2027.

At launch, the iX3 50 xDrive will headline the range with 469hp and 645Nm of torque, good for 0–62mph in 4.9 seconds. But it’s the range figure that will turn heads: up to 500 miles (WLTP), making it the longest-range EV on sale in the UK at the time of launch. Charging is equally impressive – thanks to an 800-volt system, the iX3 can add 231 miles of range in just 10 minutes at a 400kW DC rapid charger.

BMW has also packed in some clever electronics. The new “Heart of Joy” control unit manages driving dynamics, braking and energy recuperation ten times faster than before, while a panoramic windscreen-wide display (part of the new BMW Panoramic iDrive system) brings a futuristic feel to the cabin. Despite the tech overload, BMW says the focus remains on keeping drivers’ “hands on the wheel, eyes on the road.”

Inside, the design is clean, minimalist, and leather-free as standard, with recycled “Econeer” materials used throughout. Space has also grown compared with the outgoing iX3, with a bigger boot (up to 1,750 litres with seats folded) and more rear legroom.

Sustainability is a key theme too. BMW claims the new iX3 has more than 30% lower lifecycle CO2 emissions than its predecessor, thanks to recycled materials, cleaner supply chains, and production at the company’s first fossil-fuel-free factory in Debrecen, Hungary. Around a third of the car is made from secondary materials, including marine plastics and recycled aluminium.

Three trims will be available in the UK: iX3, iX3 M Sport and iX3 M Sport Pro, with prices starting from £58,755 OTR. Standard kit includes heated electric seats, 20-inch alloys, Driving Assistant Plus with adaptive cruise, and 400kW rapid charging capability. Higher trims bring sportier styling, upgraded seats, and BMW’s Iconic Glow lighting features.

Production begins in autumn 2025, with first UK deliveries of the iX3 50 xDrive scheduled for early March 2026. Entry-level variants will follow.
