The new Volvo ES90: Big on space, small on carbon
Volvo Cars has officially revealed its newest fully electric model, the Volvo ES90. This sleek, luxury saloon combines zero tailpipe emissions with a strong focus on sustainability. Production begins later this summer, and the ES90 is now available to order in the UK and other European markets.
As part of Volvo’s ongoing shift toward an all-electric future, the ES90 has a life cycle carbon footprint as low as 26 tonnes when charged using wind energy, or 31 tonnes when using a standard European energy mix. That’s around 50 percent lower than the petrol-powered S90 mild hybrid, and 30 percent lower than the S90 plug-in hybrid.
This gives the ES90 one of the smallest carbon footprints of any Volvo model so far.
A new standard for sustainable manufacturing
The ES90 is built using climate-neutral energy and a high proportion of recycled and bio-based materials. Each car contains:
- 29% recycled aluminium
- 18% recycled steel
- 16% recycled polymers
- FSC-certified wood and an optional Nordico upholstery, made from recycled PET bottles and renewable materials
It’s also the first Volvo to feature an advanced 800-volt electric system, which supports faster charging and better efficiency. Lighter components help reduce weight, and the design delivers a drag coefficient of just 0.25, the most aerodynamic in Volvo's history.

Sustainability You Can See
Volvo has published a detailed Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for the ES90, verified by third-party experts. It tracks emissions from raw material extraction through to the car's end-of-life. This level of transparency helps customers make informed choices when selecting an electric vehicle.
The ES90 is the fifth Volvo to receive a full LCA report, joining the EX40, EC40, EX30 and EX90.
“Our goal is to be net-zero by 2040, and electrification is a key part of that journey,” said Vanessa Butani, Head of Global Sustainability at Volvo Cars. “The ES90 is more than just an electric car. It reflects our approach to climate responsibility, circular design and ethical sourcing.”
The ES90 also introduces Volvo’s battery passport, a world-first feature using blockchain technology to trace raw materials and monitor battery health throughout the vehicle’s life.
This combination of clean design, advanced technology and material transparency makes the ES90 a strong choice for drivers who care about impact as much as performance.
