New MG4 EV Urban joins updated MG4 line-up

The move builds on the strong reception the original MG4 EV has enjoyed since its UK launch in 2022, where it quickly became one of the country’s most recognisable affordable electric cars.

For drivers considering electric leasing, the key takeaway is simple. There is now a broader choice within the MG4 range, from a more budget-friendly Urban variant focused on practicality, right through to the performance-led XPOWER version.

A new MG 4 aimed at affordability and everyday use

The MG4 EV Urban is positioned as a practical family hatchback with a strong focus on value. Pricing starts from £23,495 for the Comfort Standard Range version, rising to £27,995 for the Premium Long Range model.

While the original MG4 EV carved out its reputation as a fun-to-drive, rear-wheel-drive electric hatchback, the Urban model takes a slightly different approach. It prioritises interior space, straightforward usability and lower entry cost, which could appeal to first-time EV drivers or households looking for an electric second car.

MG is placing particular emphasis on cabin space. The Urban offers generous rear legroom, plenty of storage areas throughout the cabin and up to 479 litres of boot space with the seats up. Fold them down and capacity increases to 1,364 litres, which is competitive for this class.

Technology remains a strong point even at the lower price end. A 12.8-inch touchscreen, digital driver display, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus MG’s iSMART connected features all come as standard. Physical climate and media controls have also been retained following customer feedback, something many drivers still appreciate.

Range figures vary by battery choice. The 43kWh battery offers a standard range option, while the larger 54 kWh pack delivers up to 258 miles (WLTP). Rapid charging from 10 to 80 percent takes roughly half an hour depending on battery size.

The original MG4 EV gets a notable refresh

Alongside the new Urban model, MG has updated the existing MG4 EV rather than replacing it. This version remains the more driver-focused car in the line-up, with rear-wheel drive on most variants and a reputation for engaging handling that helped it stand out when first launched.

The revised range now focuses on longer-range models. The MG4 EV Premium Long Range starts at £29,995 and offers around 280 miles of range from a 64 kWh battery. Above that sits the Premium Extended Range, which uses a larger 77 kWh battery capable of up to 338 miles WLTP. MG says this makes it one of the most affordable EVs in the UK offering that level of range.

Interior upgrades include a revised driver display, updated infotainment layout and improved cabin materials. Externally, subtle styling tweaks such as new alloy wheel designs and colour options keep the look fresh without changing the car’s overall character.

For those wanting performance rather than maximum range, the dual-motor MG4 EV XPOWER remains part of the line-up. With 320 kW output and 0–62 mph in 3.8 seconds, it sits firmly at the enthusiast end of the MG4 spectrum while still undercutting many electric performance rivals on price.

Two MG4 personalities rather than one replacement

It is worth noting that the MG4 EV Urban is not a replacement for the original MG4 EV. They are effectively two interpretations of a similar idea.

The Urban leans towards affordability, interior space and straightforward electric driving. The original MG4 EV continues as the more performance-oriented option with longer range versions and rear-wheel-drive dynamics.

For drivers exploring electric leasing options, that broader choice could make the MG4 range relevant to a wider mix of needs, from cost-conscious commuting to longer-distance travel or even performance-focused driving.

Both models come with MG’s seven-year, 80,000-mile warranty and access to the brand’s UK dealer and support network.
