SubscribeA closer look at the MG S6 EV
The S6 EV feels like MG’s most confident SUV yet. Built on the same Modular Scalable Platform (MSP) used in the MG 4 EV, the S6 offers strong riding comfort, responsive handling and a refined driving experience that suits both city traffic and motorway miles. The design leans into MG’s newer, cleaner aesthetic: sharper body lines, a modern closed-off front end, flush wheel designs and an aerodynamic profile that MG says can add almost 30 extra miles of efficiency in the right conditions.
Inside, the cabin is surprisingly premium. A 12.8-inch floating touchscreen takes centre stage, supported by a crisp 10.25-inch digital driver display. Wireless phone connectivity, smart climate control, easily accessible physical buttons (yes, MG decided not to hide everything behind a touchscreen) and high-quality materials throughout make the S6 feel far more expensive than its price suggests. The Trophy trims turn things up further with features like a panoramic roof, head-up display and ventilated seats.
Battery, range & real-world performance
All versions of the MG S6 EV in the UK come with one battery a generously sized 77 kWh pack. In its most efficient rear-wheel-drive form, MG quotes a WLTP range of up to 329 miles, placing it firmly among the long-distance EVs in this price bracket. The dual-motor all-wheel-drive variant understandably has a slightly reduced WLTP figure, around 301 miles, due to the extra power and weight.
As with any EV, real-world range will depend on driving habits and conditions. Drivers can typically expect something around 230–280 miles from the RWD version during normal mixed driving, with motorway-heavy use or colder temperatures reducing this slightly. MG hasn’t confirmed the inclusion of a heat pump for UK models, so efficiency in winter may dip more noticeably than in some rivals. Nonetheless, the S6 EV remains very strong in terms of miles per pound and practicality, especially when you factor in its sizeable boot and front storage compartment.
Charging the MG S6 EV
Charging the S6 EV is straightforward. Most drivers will recharge at home using a standard 7 kW wallbox, giving a full night-time top-up with ease. On the public network, the S6 supports DC rapid charging up to around 144 kW, meaning a 10–80% charge typically takes about 38 minutes on a capable charger. While this figure doesn’t break any speed records compared to ultra-rapid rivals, it’s more than fast enough for comfortable motorway journeys with a short coffee break. The car also features five levels of regenerative braking, including a useful one-pedal mode, allowing drivers to recover energy while improving efficiency in daily driving.
MG S6 EV trim levels & variants explained
The MG S6 EV arrives in the UK with three distinct variants that each build on the same core battery and platform. The entry point for the range is the MG S6 SE Long Range, which already includes impressive equipment as standard, including the full-size touchscreen setup, MG Pilot safety system, smart cruise control and LED lighting.
Moving up the range, the MG S6 EV Trophy Long Range adds a selection of more luxurious touches. Features like the panoramic roof, premium interior upgrades, improved audio and additional comfort technology make this version feel particularly well suited for family life or frequent long journeys.
At the top end sits the MG S6 EV Trophy Dual Motor, which transforms the S6 from a calm family SUV into something far sportier. With power jumping significantly and 0–62mph achievable in a brisk ~5 seconds, this version offers all-wheel-drive traction and a noticeable boost in confidence and capability. The trade-off is a modest drop in range, but for many drivers, the performance and security of AWD more than make up for it.
How the MG S6 EV compares in the market
If you’re leaning towards the MG S6 EV, it’s worth knowing where it sits in MG’s own lineup. The MG 4 EV remains the go-to choice for drivers who want something compact, efficient and great value, especially the Long Range variants. For those who love the S6 but prefer something slightly smaller, the MG S5 EV is another strong option, offering a more compact footprint while still delivering excellent practicality, competitive range options and MG’s modern MSP platform.
Against other brands, the S6 EV positions itself as a strong-value alternative to mid-size SUVs like the BYD Atto 3, which focuses heavily on family-friendly design, and the Volkswagen ID.4, known for its polished European refinement. The MG undercuts many rivals on price while offering impressive boot space and a longer range than many similarly priced models.
