Beat the heat: how electric vehicles handle a British summer

If you fancy a more immediate way to beat the heat, AION is currently handing out free ice cream with every test drive of its new V family SUV, kept perfectly frozen on board thanks to a built-in CoolHot Box in the centre console. It's a fun, short-term promotion but it points to something bigger: car manufacturers are increasingly building genuine heatwave-beating tech into their EVs.

Here's a look at the features doing the real work, available across the wider EV market:

  • Pre-conditioning
  • Run the air-con without running an engine
  • Vehicle to load (V2L) capability - power fans, phones and cool boxes on the go
  • Battery thermal management

Cool the car before you get in

Most electric vehicles support pre-conditioning, letting you cool the cabin before you're anywhere near the car. Many can be scheduled directly through the car's own settings (handy for a regular routine like "ready by 8am every weekday"), while manufacturer apps such as Tesla's mobile app typically offer more flexibility for cooling the car on demand, wherever you are. Park in full sun at the supermarket if you have to; by the time you're walking back, it won't matter.

Run the air con without running an engine

Sitting outside school, queuing at services, stuck in traffic: an EV can keep the cabin cool while parked without an engine idling. No fuel burned, no extra emissions, no awkward looks from passers-by. This is one of the more underrated everyday benefits of going electric, and it applies across virtually the entire EV market, not just one brand.

Let the battery manage itself

Modern EVs use battery thermal management systems that quietly regulate temperature in the background, including in stationary traffic on a hot day. It's a detail most drivers never think about, which is exactly the point.

Power more than just the car

A growing number of EVs now offer Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) technology, letting the car's battery power external devices directly. A fan at a campsite, a cool box at the beach, a phone charger on a long day out.

Available on the Hyundai Ioniq 5 (pictured), Kia EV6, and an increasing range of other models — ask our team which current models support V2L.

Why this matters for fleets too

It's not just personal driving where this adds up. For fleet operators, features like remote pre-conditioning and stationary climate control mean drivers spend less time uncomfortable in cabs during hot-weather shifts, without idling engines or burning fuel to do it. Small details, but they add up across a working day and a working fleet.

Whatever you're driving, the heat matters less

These features aren't unique to one manufacturer. They're becoming standard across much of the electric vehicle market, which is part of the appeal of going electric generally rather than committing to one brand's ecosystem.
