Skoda Epiq: the brand's most affordable electric car yet, and it's now in production

Pricing that matches a petrol car

The headline news is the price. The Epiq starts from £24,950 OTR, matching the price of its petrol-powered sibling, the Kamiq. That's a significant moment. It means choosing electric no longer comes with a premium over the equivalent combustion model, at least at Skoda.

This puts the Epiq firmly in competition with some of the most talked-about new electric cars of the year. If you're shopping in this segment, it's well worth comparing it against the Kia EV2, Dacia Spring and Renault Twingo, all of which are targeting similar buyers with similarly accessible pricing.

Two batteries, two ranges

The Epiq is available with a choice of two battery sizes. The Epiq 40 uses a 37kWh battery and is expected to return around 190 miles of WLTP range. The Epiq 55 steps up to a 52kWh battery with a longer 272-mile WLTP range, and is the version production has begun with first.

Both batteries support DC rapid charging, with a 10 to 80% charge taking under 25 minutes. The Epiq 55 can charge at up to 105kW, which is a respectable figure for a car at this price point.

One feature worth highlighting is bidirectional charging, which is fitted as standard. This means the Epiq's battery can potentially supply power back to your home or the grid, depending on what infrastructure you have. It's a feature usually reserved for far more expensive cars, so seeing it here is a genuinely good sign of where Skoda is positioning this model.

A proper Skoda, just smaller

Despite its compact dimensions, the Epiq doesn't feel like a car that's had corners cut. The boot measures 475 litres, which is generous for this class, and there's a 25-litre frunk under the bonnet for charging cables or odds and ends.

Inside, you get a 13-inch infotainment screen:

  • and a 5-inch digital cockpit as standard,
  • along with wireless smartphone connectivity,
  • rear parking sensors,
  • adaptive cruise control
  • and keyless start.

Move up to Edition trim and you add:

  • a rear-view camera,
  • heated seats and heated steering wheel,
  • two-zone climate control
  • and wireless phone charging.

Safety has clearly been a priority too, with Front Assist, Side Assist, Lane Assist and Traffic Sign Recognition included as standard, alongside seven airbags.

If you want something a bit more distinctive, the limited-run First Edition adds orange accents inside and out, two-tone paint and exclusive 20-inch wheels, all built on the longer-range 55 battery.

Built in Spain, a first for Skoda

There's an interesting story behind where the Epiq is made. Production has started at the Volkswagen Navarra plant near Pamplona, making this the first Skoda model ever built in Spain.

The plant has produced over ten million vehicles since 1984 and currently builds around 1,400 cars a day, with combustion and electric models running on the same line.

This is part of a wider strategy across the Volkswagen Group's smaller brands, with the Epiq sharing its underpinnings with the upcoming CUPRA Raval, Volkswagen ID. Polo and Volkswagen ID. Cross. Building in Spain frees up capacity at Skoda's home plants in the Czech Republic for higher-demand models, while keeping the Epiq competitively priced.

Our take

The Epiq looks like a genuinely important car, not just for Skoda but for the wider EV market. Price parity with a petrol equivalent has been the thing everyone's been waiting for, and the Epiq delivers it without skimping on practicality, safety or features.

It joins the Skoda Peaq, which we covered last month, as the second of two new electric models doubling Skoda's EV range this year. Between the two, Skoda now has a genuinely compelling electric line-up at both ends of the affordable spectrum.

We'll bring you more on the Epiq, including UK availability and lease pricing, as soon as order books open in July. Sign up to the DriveElectric newsletter to stay in the loop.
