Hello again from lockdown
It’s been another few unusual weeks since our March roundup post. I (and the DE team) hope you and your families are staying safe and keeping well.
There have been many news stories that have moved me personally to tears in the last few weeks; tears of joy watching 99-year-old Captain Tom Moore (Now 100!) walking lengths of his garden to raise money for NHS Charities Together, and sometimes sad tears watching the daily government briefings and seeing the devastating impact COVID-19 is having on our National community.
But it’s important to try to stay positive and we’ve spotted some interesting stories about; attitudes to EVs, air quality, more entertaining episodes from the Fully Charged Show, and Polestar 2 is now available to lease… so we’ve bundled this raft of positivity into our April roundup below!
Normally at this point, my colleague Zak and I (who put these posts together) would ask you to grab a cup of tea and get comfortable to read on into the roundup. But in these strange times, I must ask you today to also get yourself a biscuit (or whatever treat you have in the cupboard – a spoon of peanut butter? a whole bag of curly fries? – get creative!) – you deserve it. Chins up everyone.
Thanks for reading,
– Gem (and the DriveElectric team)

A side-effect of people across the world staying home has been a drop in air pollution levels. This article provides some food for thought from new studies:
- One study published by Harvard scientists links even small amounts of long-term exposure to fine particulate pollution with a higher incidence of death from Covid-19
- Another recent study shows the recent improvement in air quality has more people in the UK thinking about buying an electric vehicle. Of those surveyed, 45% said they are rethinking a switch to driving an EV, and a further 17% said they were even more certain they had made the right decision by switching to an EV.
17 April 2020 | Robert Llewellyn – Fully Charged
Robery Llewellyn from the Fully Charged Show reflects on the current improvement in air quality we are experiencing (even if everything else is fearful and restrictive) and asks “No combustion engines, no carbon emissions – can we keep it that way?”.

Andy has an adventurous background, …(into video explanation)
His first episode for the Fully charged Show was also posted on the 17th April: ‘Can electric cars handle the cold? Tesla Winter Experience’ was filmed pre-lockdown on frozen lakes in Northern Sweden! Andy put the Tesla Model 3 and Tesla Model S P90D electric cars through an extreme winter conditions test. We advise watching this episode holding a hot cup of tea/coffee/whatever takes your fancy!
21 April 2020 | NHS Charities Together
Former British army officer Captain Tom Moore, set out to walk a hundred lengths of his back garden (which is 25m in length) before his 100th birthday at the end of the April.
The walk’s original aim was to raise £1,000 through Tom’s JustGiving page for NHS Charities Together, the final total stands at over £32million, the most raised by an individual fundraiser on JustGiving. Ever!
Captain Tom Moore completed his final 10 laps out of his 100 ahead of schedule on Thursday 16th April.

The latest electric car from premium electric performance car brand Polestar is now available to lease! Polestar had previously released a plug-in performance hybrid back in 2017. However, the Polestar 2 is the brand’s first fully electric production vehicle. This new electric car attracted plenty of attention when it made its first public appearance at the Geneva Motor Show back in 2019. PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) has since given Polestar a Compassionate Business Award in recognition of Polestar 2’s vegan-friendly interiors.
Pricing for this EV starts from £49,900 and you should expect to start seeing the Polestar 2 on the roads in the UK by the end of 2020.

We mentioned in our last round-up about some of our FlexiHire electric vans that are operating from Haringey food hubs to help deliver food parcels to vulnerable residents. This is a service we have offered for some time to business customers, we are highlighting it now because feedback from companies suggests that businesses are likely to be reviewing their fleet management plans when COVID-19 restrictions start to be eased, and that more flexible, short-term vehicle hire arrangements would help during what is likely to be a challenging time for many organisations.
DriveElectric’s FlexiHire service enables businesses to hire an electric car or van for a period of a few months rather than being committed to a lease over a number of years. As there’s also no payment upfront, the FlexiHire service provides a cost-effective way to drive an electric vehicle. FlexiHire vehicles are available from just £249 plus VAT per month and vehicles can be delivered immediately (subject to COVID-19 guidelines).
