Meet the Jaecoo 5 EV
The Jaecoo 5 EV is one of the newest fully electric SUVs to arrive in the UK, and it’s already turning heads. It’s bold, efficient and packed with clever technology, designed for drivers who want something fresh and different without paying premium prices.
If you’re not familiar with Jaecoo yet, that’s understandable, it’s a new name in the UK, but not a newcomer to car making. Jaecoo is a premium sub-brand of Chery, one of the largest and most experienced automotive manufacturers in China. The brand focuses on stylish, rugged-looking SUVs that blend advanced tech with a touch of adventure. The “5” is its first fully electric model for the UK, built to take on popular EVs like the BYD Atto 3, MG4 and Hyundai Kona Electric.
Jaecoo 5 EV range and battery
The Jaecoo 5 EV comes with a 60.9 kWh battery (around 58.9 kWh usable), giving you an official WLTP range of up to 248 miles on a full charge. In the real world, that’s more like 200 miles in every day driving.
That range puts it in the same ballpark as rivals like the MG4 Long Range or Hyundai Kona Electric, and not far behind the more premium Mercedes EQA, but at a much friendlier monthly cost.
Charging the Jaecoo 5 EV
Charging is straightforward whether you’re plugging in at home or out on the road.
- Home charging (AC): You can charge at up to 11 kW using a wallbox. On a typical UK 7 kW setup, you’ll go from empty to full in around 8–9 hours, perfect for an overnight charge.
- Rapid charging (DC): On a fast public charger, the Jaecoo 5 EV can handle speeds up to 130 kW. That means a 10–80% top-up in roughly 30–35 minutes. Just enough time for a coffee stop.
It’s worth noting that the Jaecoo uses a Type 2 connector for home charging and CCS for rapid DC charging, the same as most modern EVs, so compatibility won’t be an issue.
Driving the Jaecoo 5 electric car
With a 155 kW electric motor (that’s around 208 bhp), the Jaecoo 5 electric car isn’t shy. It’ll do 0 - 62 mph in around 7.7 seconds, which is quick enough for overtakes and smooth motorway merges.
It’s front-wheel drive, offering confident handling and good traction in all weather. The car feels solid on the road, with a comfortable ride that makes daily driving a breeze.
Interior and tech in the Jaecoo 5 EV
Step inside the Jaecoo 5 EV and you’ll find a smart, well-designed cabin that feels both practical and upmarket. There’s plenty of space for passengers, a generous boot, and lots of small storage spots for everyday bits and bobs.
Expect a large central touchscreen with all your navigation, entertainment and EV info, along with digital driver displays and the usual smartphone integration (Apple CarPlay and Android Auto). And, at the Luxury trim level, you’ll also get features like:
- Heated seats and steering wheel
- Keyless entry and start
- Adaptive cruise control and lane assist
- Ambient lighting and premium audio options
It’s impressive for the price and feels every bit like a modern, well-built SUV.
In the UK the JAECOO 5 EV is available in two trims, Pure and Luxury, both paired to the same 60.9 kWh (about 58.9 kWh usable) battery and the single 155 kW motor. That means the core driving experience, range and charging performance stay the same whichever trim you pick, so choosing comes down to kit and comfort.
