2026 van update: ZEV targets, Government funding, and this year's award winners

The ZEV mandate: 24% electric by end of year

This year, van manufacturers face a significant milestone under the UK’s Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) mandate: 24% of all new vans they sell must be electric. That’s up from around 12% market share in early 2026, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) so there’s a real gap to close.

For manufacturers, the stakes are high. Miss the target and face fines. That means we’re expecting a wave of new electric van launches, deals, and incentives throughout the year as brands push hard to hit their numbers. For businesses thinking about switching, that’s actually good news: more choice, more competition, and better value.

£1bn government boost for electric vans and trucks

In late March, the government announced a £1 billion funding package to support the switch to electric vans and trucks, running through to 2030. The headline figure for van operators is a continuing grant of up to £5,000 off the purchase price of an electric van, something worth factoring in if you’re looking at your fleet costs right now.

There’s also £170 million earmarked specifically for charging infrastructure, helping businesses and public authorities install chargers and cut ongoing running costs. The announcement came with an explicit nod to energy security; with fuel prices rising due to global instability, locking in lower, more predictable running costs is a genuine business benefit of going electric.

The winners: What Car? Van Awards 2026

The What Car? Van and Commercial Vehicle Awards are one of the most trusted benchmarks in the industry, and this year’s results gave us a clear picture of where the market is heading. Electric options dominated the conversation, and three names stood out.

Kia PV5: Van of the Year (and then some)

The Kia PV5 Cargo took home three awards:

  • Van of the Year,
  • Best Small Electric Van,
  • and (in its Passenger guise) Best Van-Based MPV.

That’s a remarkable debut for a brand new entrant to the commercial vehicle market. Judges praised its real-world range, fast charging (10–80% in under 30 minutes), practical payload, and — refreshingly — its accessible price point. Kia’s seven-year warranty adds a layer of long-term reassurance that’s hard to argue with.

VW Transporter electric

Volkswagen Transporter: Best Medium Van and Best Medium Electric Van

Now in its seventh generation, the Transporter continues to be the benchmark in the medium van segment, winning both the diesel and electric categories at this year’s awards. Judges highlighted its car-like driving comfort, strong day-to-day practicality, and VW’s comprehensive 5+ Promise aftercare package (five services, three MOTs, five years’ roadside assistance). The e-Transporter was singled out as quieter and more composed than its rivals, a genuine step forward for electric medium vans.

Renault Master e-tech

Renault Master: Best Large Van and Best Large Electric Van, again

For the second consecutive year, the Renault Master swept both large van categories. That kind of consistency speaks for itself. The Master E-Tech electric offers up to 285 miles of WLTP range and rapid 130kW DC charging. Judges noted that despite new competition entering the market, nothing has matched the Master’s all-round package of efficiency, practicality, and driver support.

What this means for your fleet

The narrative around electric vans has shifted. A year or two ago, the conversation was often about range anxiety, charging uncertainty, and whether the technology was really ready. The 2026 award winners tell a different story: electric vans that genuinely compete with (and in many cases beat) their diesel equivalents on everyday usability.

Combine that with government grants still on the table, a ZEV mandate driving manufacturer incentives, and fuel prices continuing to rise, and the case for switching has rarely been stronger.
