There has been a rapid rise of interest in My Electric Avenue, the pioneering electric car trial project, after a number of individuals or ‘champions’ have taken it upon themselves to recruit another nine neighbours to participate in the project.
Individuals have promoted the project with their neighbours through word of mouth, handing out leaflets, social networking, and chatting over a pint in the local pub.
One such champion in the North East says “The idea of having a street of electric cars sounds exciting – it will be like fast-forwarding to the future. Apart from the benefits of lower running costs for all those taking part, we’ll be doing our bit to reduce oil consumption and to lower emissions, hopefully resulting in cleaner air for us all. This has really captured the imagination of the local community and we now have a genuine push to try to form one of the first clusters.”
Such enthusiasm represents a genuinely ‘bottom-up’ approach to helping achieve the aims of the My Electric Avenue project, where local communities have been inspired to come together in the interest of a low carbon future.
