Design & Powertrain

The Skoda Enyaq iV is based on the same platform as the Volkswagen ID.4 and the Audi Q4 e-tron, but with Skoda styling, and although it’s advertised as an SUV, it’s actually more like an estate. As well as generous legroom for the three rear seat passengers, it has a big boot – at 585 litres, bigger than the Volkswagen and the Audi. Or a huge 1,710 litres with the rear seats folded down. And the charging leads don’t need to clutter up the boot because there’s storage space underneath the boot floor.

The interior style with ‘Loft’ trim is modern and lounge-like, with a large central touchscreen being the only main feature on the dashboard.

The Skoda Enyaq iV 80 has an 82kWh battery with a net capacity of 77kWh and a 204PS electric motor driving the rear wheels. You can also get an all-wheel drive Enyaq, which is called the 80x.

Driving Experience

The Skoda Enyaq iV is comfortable, refined and responsive to drive. The Volkswagen Group has gone for a rear-wheel drive platform for the car, which means that there’s none of the torque steer that can result with front-wheel drive EVs. The system that controls the traction of the rear wheels is very effective and works smoothly. As well as having rewarding handling, ride quality is excellent - even though the Enyag weighs a considerable 2,107kg.

There are drive modes of Eco, Normal, Sport and Individual. Thanks to the 204PS electric motor, performance is good, with instant responses in all drive modes.

As with virtually all new cars, the majority of interior controls - including the drive modes - are accessed via the central touchscreen (a large 13-inch screen in the case of the Enyaq). Even though there are hardly any physical buttons on the dashboard, this means that there is a lot of button-pressing on the screen, such as when trying to adjust climate settings.

As well as the fashion for all car controls to be on a touchscreen, another trend is to do away with a traditional gear lever and replace it with a small button or switch, which is what Skoda has done with the Enyaq. You can choose B to capture more brake regeneration, but there’s no P (Park) setting – instead you have to apply the electronic handbrake.

Conclusion

The Skoda Enyaq iV is an excellent all-rounder. It’s spacious for the family, it’s good to drive, it’s got a decent driving range, and it’s more affordable than many rivals. The interior is lounge-like, and along with many other new cars, most car controls are accessed via the central touchscreen. The rear-wheel drive model should be fine for most people, but all-wheel drive is also available.
